It is a type of annuity contract that in addition to ensuring a specific periodic income payments throughout the lifetime of a named individual also guarantees that a refund of the difference will be made if the annuitant dies before the total of the periodic payments made equals the amount paid for the annuity. It is also known as refund annuity.
Life Annuities with Refund Features
Most of the individuals who buy a life time annuity purchases a contract with some form of death benefit or refund provisions. The following two main categories of such benefits are in trend.
The first group comprises annuities that make payments for as long as the individual lives, but provide that if the individual should die before payments have been made for some minimum number of years, e.g., 10, the payments will continue until the end of the stated period. This type of annuity is often referred to as a life annuity with a period (or installments) certain.
The second type of death benefit provides that if the annuitant died before some specified period of time or before some minimum number of payments have been paid to him/her then some or all of the premiums will be refunded to a beneficiary.
These both annuities may be cash refundable or installation refundable depending on the type of refund.
